Race, Qualifying and Testing Reviews Empty Malaysian Grand Prix - Friday Practice

Post by Ross Sat Mar 22, 2008 12:02 am

After a dismal weekend in Australia, when the pace of the F2008s was the only clear thing, Ferrari are looking for a comeback in Malaysia. And although they showed that they could match the McLarens over a race distance in speed, they confirmed their single lap speed on Friday. The Maranello-based team dominated the morning session, Massa leading world champion Raikkonen by a second, with McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen a further tenth of a second adrift.
McLaren looked as strong as ever, Hamilton and Kovalainen both at some point heading the timesheets. The Finn was the fastest McLaren in the morning however, clocking a best of 1m36.556s to team mate Hamilton's 1m36.626s. Williams' Nico Rosberg edged ahead of Lewis in the closing stages to take fourth, in an all-round successful first practice for the Grove squad. The young German has not had much luck at Malaysia in the past, retiring from sixth last year, and retiring from third on the grid with engine failure in 2006.
Red Bull had a disastrous Friday morning, Mark Webber suffering an engine failure, followed by a spin and a fire, and David Coulthard's RB4 losing two front wheels and shattering it's suspension following an excursion off the track at turn 13, resulting in an impact with the outside of the kerb. Red Bull have now been summoned by the FIA to prove the safety of it's suspension, after a similar incident involving Coulthard during the Australian Grand Prix last weekend.
The Scot's incident, in syncronisation with the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen running out of fuel on track, caused the session to be red flagged for 10 minutes.
Other performances worthy of mention:- Fernando Alonso and Nelsinho Piquet finished sixth and seventh respectively for Renault, and Jenson Button drove his Honda to ninth.

Friday Practice 1 Times:
1. MASSA Ferrari 1m35.392s
2. RAIKKONEN Ferrari 1m36.459s
3. KOVALAINEN McLaren 1m36.556s
4. ROSBERG Williams 1m36.578s

22. SUTIL Force India 1m41.269s

Practice 2 was pretty uneventful, Sebastien Bourdais' Ferrari engine failing two hundred yards after leaving the pits, two minutes into the session, being perhaps the main excitement for the afternoon. Button and Honda had an all-round good day, the Brit managing an incredible fourth, ahead of a McLaren and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, whose unreliable Renault limited him to 23 laps and fourteenth on the timesheets. Renault's morning pace appeared to be a one-off, with Nelson Piquet Jr finishing a place behind his team mate in second practice in fifteenth.
Ferrari once again appeared to have the strongest cars in the Malaysian heat, on a circuit that should have theoretically hosted a Ferrari 1-2 last year. The prancing horse was ahead of every other car, Raikkonen leading for the first hour, until Massa set five consecutive fastest laps to clock a best time of 1m35.206s. In the final fifteen minute scrabble for a competetive lap time for looks on the timesheet, Lewis Hamilton put a set of Bridgestone medium compounds, the softer of the two, and drove a lap of 1m35.055s, to top the timesheets.
Vettel's fifth in the Toro Rosso is also worth a mention, the German finishing five one-hundreths of a second ahead of McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen.
